Medical Services in the Whitewater Region

MEDICAL SERVICES

Health care has been receiving considerable attention recently as the demand for medical services increases creating an insufficient number of physicians and long waiting times for medical diagnosis and treatment. Within the Township of Whitewater Region, the number of physicians practising medicine has declined over the years. Attention is now being focused on alternative models of health care to address the issue of underserviced primary health care within the Whitewater Bromley area.

The Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre (WBCHC) is a nonprofit, community-governed organization established to address the problem of underserviced primary health care in this area. A community health centre provides primary health care, health promotion and community development through a staff of health providers such as physicians, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists and dieticians as determined by the needs of local citizens.

The WBCHC operates out of two primary sites: 70 Main Street, Cobden and 20 Robertson Drive, Beachburg in the Whitewater Health Centre. The WBCHC is now part of Lanark Health and Community Services and with the assistance of funding received from the provincial government for a Community Health Centre, each site has undergone major renovations. They have also hired additional staff expanding the health care services offered. In addition, the WBCHC provides programs at other area locations such as older adult exercise, an adolescent health clinic and youth fitness.
