Accessibility Standards for Customer Service   The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005

As part of the Township’s compliance with AODA, Council approved an Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Policy for the Township of Whitewater Region on January 6th, 2010.  This policy establishes policies, practices and procedures governing the provision of goods and services to persons with disabilities.

The Township’s policy addresses:

  • use of service animals
  • use of support persons
  • notice of temporary disruptions
  • training of staff
  • feedback process
  • notice of availability of documents
  • format of documents

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is a Provincial Act which was enacted in 2005.  This Act provides for the development of province-wide mandatory standards on accessibility in all areas of daily life.  Businesses and organizations within Ontario will have to follow standards to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility.  These standards will apply to five areas:

  • customer service
  • employment
  • information and communications
  • transportation
  • built environment
